I am in the process of selling a large collection of tuba, trombone, euphonium and baritone mouthpieces. Please check back for more mouthpieces!This is a listing for one TUBA mouthpiece:• Brand: Unmarked• Model/Size: Unmarked. The shank is very large - about 9/16". Also, it is very short, only 2 7/8" from the rim to the end of the shank.• Description: Very peculiar vintage mouthpiece. It has a clear plastic rim and cup, and a raw brass throat and shank.• Condition: C (This one's tough to grade, since it isn't your typical mouthpiece. The rim has a couple nicks on it, but it is overall very smooth and playable. However, it looks like there are some internal cracks in the plastic, and I am unsure how this will affect playability.) CONDITION GRADING SYSTEM:Since I will be selling a number of mouthpieces, I have developed a grading system to keep my descriptions consistent. Here are some details on my grading system. Please feel free to ask question on any particular piece if you would like more details.Note about shank-ends: I use a shank rounding tool on all mouthpieces that are out of round. Any mouthpiece with a "B+" grade or lower may have had this work done. On occasion a tuba mouthpiece will be have a shank that is too thick for me to get the shank-end perfectly round. In cases like this I will note it in the description above. Otherwise, please assume that the shank end is round.Mouthpieces in the "A" range are new or like-new:A+ A new mouthpiece in unplayed condition.A Mouthpiece appears in perfect condition with no visible signs of play, but it may have been used very lightly.A-Extremely minor signs of play. Generally, mouthpieces with this grade will have only very minor shank marks from insertion, or one or two very light scuff marks. The rim will have no scuffs or nicks, and will look as new.Mouthpieces in the "B" range show signs of regular use, but are in excellent, useable condition. B+Rim will look near-new, and may have only the lightest of scuffs. No nicks or significant scuffs on rim. Shank will likely have insertion marks, and there may be minor scuffs or one or two extremely minor nicks on shank or outside of bowl.BMouthpiece looks well-played, but in great playing condition. Rim will feel excellent on the mouth, but may have very minor scuffs or blemishes. Bowl and shank will likely have several minor scuffs and nicks. This is the condition of a high-quality and well-loved mouthpiece that gets regularly used.B-Same as above, except there may be one or two shallow nicks or marks on the rim. These marks should not be feelable on the mouth, and they will not affect playing.Mouthpieces in the "C" range will work very well for all your needs, but there is a good amount of wear. I currently use a well-loved "C-" mouthpiece for practicing and gigs, and I have no problems, yet I can feel several imperfections on the rim, and some players may wish to consider re-plating at some point.C+Mouthpiece will have very minor nicks on rim that may or may not be feelable, but there will be no plating wear. Bowl and/or shank will likely have significant wear: minor nicks, scrapes, and maybe some extremely minor plating wear. CRim will likely have one or two feelable, deeper nicks, but no plating wear. Bowl and/or shank will have significant wear: nicks, scrapes, and possibly some plating wear.C-Same as above, except there will be more problems with the rim: either several deeper nicks and scratches, or some minor plating wear on the rim. The listing description above will indicate whether there is plating wear on the rim. Those sensitive to raw brass will want to get a mouthpiece with rim plating wear replated.Mouthpieces in the "D" range will need to be replated soon. Mouthpieces in this range will work very well for "testing out" a mouthpiece. They will play well, but will likely have significant plating loss or many uncomfortable nicks and scratches on the rim. For this reason, I would not recommend regular lengthy playing or gigging with these mouthpieces. They will need to be replated for serious regular playing.D+Rim has severe nicks and scratches, but plating is in tact. Rest of mouthpiece has significant wear (plating wear and/or nicks and scratches).D Rim has significant plating wear, but relatively few nicks or scratches. Rest of mouthpiece has significant plating wear and may have significant nicks and scratches as well.D- Rim has severe nicks and scratches and significant plating wear. Rest of mouthpiece has significant plating wear and/or sever nicks and scratches."F" Mouthpieces are not currently playable.FThese mouthpieces will not play well. Usually, this means that there are tears in the metal around the shank end, but it may also mean extremely severe gouges in the rim. A mouthpiece like this will need significant reconditioning by a brass repair shop, and the repairs will likely change the playing characteristics of the original piece.
