The person who owned it said she bought it to hang in her college dorm room some time ago. It has just been on a wall ever since. I don't know much about the instrument. I looked it up on Google and there were several web sites that told about it. Apparently it is a Japanese instrument called a KOTO. This one is made of a lightweight wood where the strings are and black painted wood at the ends. There are 16 strings and only 8 little bridges. I think there is supposed to be a bridge for each string. I would think the instrument could be fixed up really nice. There are 2 pieces of wood on the underside to keep the instrument off the floor, I guess. It measures 35" long, 8" wide.  On the back is a small handwritten sticker that says JAPANESE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT $145.00 #511On Aug-31-08 at 10:48:50 PDT, seller added the following information:I have added a couple of more pictures. Also There are no markings that I see on the instrument. The little price tag I mentioned that is on the back is not a regular store tag. It is a small white sticker that is handwritten.
