Description
This is an auction for a vintage Gibson tenor banjo. The serial number reads 8947-45. I think that it is from 1928. It is a non-mastertone model and "The Gibson" is hand painted across the headstock. All the parts on it are original except the bridge. I had that replaced by a reputable luthier about 2 months ago. He said that the bridge that was on it wasn't original either and that it was homemade. This banjo is in remarkable shape considering its age. The neck is straight and has a comfortable bow relief in it. There is no back bow in it. The resonator has some scratches on it but it is not cracked and is still solid. The head is made of genuine calf skin and is still in great shape. I had the the tuning machines greased and tightened when I had the bridge replaced. However, they are still a bit fussy. This is probably the reason why banjo makers switched from non-geared to geared tuners. The frets are all in great shape, little wear. Overall this banjo has been well taken care of, although the pictures I have posted may lack the detail to prove it. It comes with a really old case that is still operational. I'm not sure if it's original but it smells like it!These old tenor banjos are collector's items. I would keep it but I am a five string Scruggs guy. There was an error in the previous listing so I had to relist it. Sorry for the confusion.Happy bidding.
