Description
This auction is for a lovely book entitled "Christmas" ~ An American Annual of Christmas Literature and Art - Volume 13 - First Edition. It was edited by: Randolph E. Haugan. Augsburg Publishing House - 1943 Minneapolis. It is a beautiful book, cloth bound in navy linen with a beautiful winter scene ("Christmas in the Valley") print on the book cover by Stryker Ingerman (it is the same print that is on the box which is shown in the first posted photo), and the title, volume, etc. are printed on the spine in gilt. It comes with the original presentation box, that has the same art print as the front cover of the book. The Table of Contents lists the following: Stories - The First Christmas, They Departed Into Their Own Country, Louisiana Christmas Gift (which corresponds with a lovely two page color illustration), Treasure House at the Crossroads, and Snippen's Dilemma. Articles - American Chorale Music, Girl Scout Carolers (custom began in 1915 in Minneapolis), A Christmas Salute to West Pointe and Annapolis, The Red Cross and The Day of Santa Lucia. Poetry - In Praise of Meekness, A Lovely Starlit Night, Christmas and Christmas Bells A-Ringing. Christmas Carols - Shepherds Rejoice, Legends of The Infancy, Joy To The World, Morning Star and Lullaby on Christmas Eve. Art - Christmas in The Valley , The Star of Bethlehem, Madonna and Child, Silent Night, Christmas in Louisiana, Illustrators are listed as: Franklin Booth, Regina Swedenborg, Lee Mero, Stryker Ingerman and Knute Heldner. There are several lovely photos, and a number of full page and inserted illustrations. This is really a lovely 'vignette' into 1940's American culture, and customs. The prints are nicely done, and the whole book is in just "pristine" condition! The pages are crisp and clean, no binding creases or breakage, no bent corners or discolorations. It does not smell of smoke or have pet odors. There is no water damage, foxing or mildew. The only damage to the book itself is a very small tear 1/8" ? on the bottom of one of the plain pages in the front that resulted in a small fold. The presentation box is skuffed, there are some small marks on the illustration and the corners have separated. The top cover is silver with the print illustration centered on the front. If you have any questions about this lovely book, please contact me prior to the end of the auction. This will be shipped 'insured'.
