Description
Vintage Tones recently acquired this extremely rare example of a historic Ela M 251E tube recording condenser microphone. It was originally sold to Long View Farm recording studio in Massachusetts by Mercenary Audio. When we got the mic in, it was badly in need of restoration, which was done by Telefunken | USA. The parts of the microphone that were salvageable were salvaged, and the rest of the parts were replaced using the same parts that are used in Telefunken | USA’s new version of the Ela M 251E. The body tube, headgrill, and base ring are completely original. However, a new “Telefunken” badge was added to the body tube because the original one was not present. Inside the microphone, almost all of the plastics had to be replaced, with the exception of the bottom plastic plate of the switch housing. A breadboard circuit had replaced the original circuit board, but most of the original components were kept. Telefunken | USA replaced the breadboard circuit with new circuit board plastics and metal posts. 2 resistors and 2 capacitors had to be replaced, but the rest of the resistors and capacitors are original. It was also discovered that the original output transformer had drifted slightly out of spec, so it was replaced by a new Haufe T14/1 transformer. Because the original switch housing was almost completely destroyed, a new one was installed. The original CK12 capsule was kept along with the original capsule mount. The tube socket and tube socket wiring were salvaged and the original tube was kept. The bottom connector and connector ring remain original, as well as the inner base ring and one of the side straps. The swivel base connector is original, but the cable was changed before the microphone came to us. Also, the power supply had been modified to have a female 6-pin Neutrik input connector, with a male 6-pin Neutrik connector put on the other end of the cable. The power supply was recapped in 2001, and Telefunken replaced the bottom power supply casing.
