Description
On Saturday, June 28th, at around 3:00 a.m., Jason Statts and Dave Williams were needlessly shot while arriving at a friend’s house on East 48th Street in Savannah, Georgia. They had just finished playing their first show as Sürt {the destroyer} at the Live Wire on River Street. A single bullet went through Jason’s neck and lodged in Dave’s neck. Their injuries are very serious and both guys have a long and painful recovery ahead of them. Ebay Auctions Custom Guitar to Benefit Shooting Victims Surt {the destroyer} Bass honors Jason Statts and David Williams   Corona, Calif. and Savannah, Ga.– Chip Ellis, a masterbuilder with Fender Musical Instruments, has designed and produced a custom bass guitar to honor Ardsley Park shooting victims Jason Statts and David Williams. The bass will be auctioned on eBay for two weeks beginning Sunday, Oct. 12, and all proceeds from the auction will benefit Statts’ and Williams’ recovery efforts as a result of the June 28, 2008 shooting.   Ellis, who lived in Savannah and attended the Savannah College of Art and Design until 2003, is a masterbuilder with the Jackson/Charvel and EVH lines of guitars with Fender in Corona, Calif. (www.fender.com).  Ellis and Statts share a mutual love of music and have been friends for more than two years.  Best-known for replicating Eddie Van Halen’s famous “Frankenstein” guitar, Ellis was eager to be able to contribute to Statts’ and Williams’ recovery.  “Building a custom bass was not only the obvious thing for me to do, it was the most personal and appropriate way for me to pay tribute to two fellow musicians,” he says.   Fender generously allowed Ellis the time to build and customize the guitar and also donated all of the building materials.  The guitar prominently features the logo of Statts’ and Williams’ band, “Surt {the destroyer}” and is heavily “reliced” with scratches and dings in the new paint. The relicing on the fresh paint is meant to reflect the fact that though Statts and Williams are now two new people after this incident, they will always have their scars from that night.   Statts and Williams had just finished and were celebrating their first Surt {the destroyer} show when they were attacked in the early morning hours of June 28.  After a long hospital stay, Williams’ recovery continues in Savannah.  Statts, who was paralyzed in the shooting, is receiving extensive rehabilitation at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Both men face mounting bills from this incident.
