Description
Be sure to add me to your favorites list! Another one of the latest.....hottest, new double basses from Upton Bass!   The UB Hybrid Standard, Hand-Carved European Spruce top, slab cut face laminations of Italian Poplar. Elegant looks and magnificent sound.  Ten reasons to buy your double bass from Upton Bass... CLICK HERE to see what satisfied customers say about the UB Hybrid!!! What does Upton Bass mean when they say this double bass is a Hybrid?  Certainly they don't mean gas/electric???  The Upton Bass Hybrid bass; be it the UB Hybrid  (dark brown varnish) or the SuperSwing Hybrid, the UB Hybrid has a solid carved spruce top and a laminated back giving you the best of both worlds: a carved basses sound and feel, blended with the economical use of laminated/ply wood backs.  Still confused...please feel free to call and discuss 860-535-9399 Instrument Photo Gallery: (Click on photo's below for larger images.  Photographs are large and may take time to view) Click on the images below for a close-up         Please Note: Discrepancies may occur in the color of the instruments pictured. Monitor settings, screen resolution, lighting, and background all contribute to the latter. As each bass is composed of unique pieces of wood, there are inherent qualities in the wood itself which make each bass slightly different from one and other which must be taken in to account when ordering. All hardware and parts pictured are subject to change and availability. Upton Bass guarantees and stands behind the function and quality of all hardware and parts installed on each and every one of our basses.   Approximate Body Dimensions:Upper Bout - 19 3/4 inchesC Bout - 15 inchesLower Bout - 26 1/4 inchesRib - 7 inches at neck set to 8 inches at endpinBody Length - 44 3/4 inchesString Length - 42 inches At Upton Bass String Instrument Company, our goal is to bring you affordable double basses that have the same attributes a luthier commissioned upright bass costing ten times the asking price of our double basses would have. With our own double bass design, the quality of the materials used, the traditional construction methods, the level of care and refinement our setups include and all of the upgraded accessory items, our double basses are not only the most unique upright basses on the market today, but they are the best valued basses in the world! The UB Hybrid Double Bass is a rich, tonally complex double bass constructed to the exacting specifications of Upton Bass.  See how we designed it here! The back is made of graduated laminations of well-seasoned maple with a poplar core. What makes the UB Hybrid Double Bass unique is its solid carved spruce top. Varnish, does it matter?  YES!  The varnish on all Upton Basses is a proprietary Linseed Oil mixture that is applied in a traditional manner that accentuates the natural beauty of the wood and the tone.  Hundreds of  years of great instrument making cannot be wrong!  Our varnish is not a heavily sprayed lacquer or a overly delicate spirit finish that is found on factory basses from Europe, Asia and America.  Our varnish is the same varnish luthiers use on double basses that cost $25,000 or MORE! Our varnish is hand applied by our artisans (actual Upton Bass employees!) in our Stonington, Connecticut workshop! We have tested our varnish in the most extreme situations and are 100% confident in it's durability.  Each bass, just like a piece of wood, has it's own organic fingerprint and will take on the varnish differently, and imprint the individual characteristics of your bass.  While we go to great lengths to get a consistent look from bass to bass,  your bass will be YOUR bass, and no other Upton Bass will be identical! Real inlayed purfling & individual German made Rubner tuners add to this basses appeal. We have reversed the orientation of the tuners to lessen the tension on the E string (if you want the traditional setting, we can do that to...remember, although it is an Upton Bass, it's YOUR bass!). We cut "pockets" under the tabs and worm gears to relieve stress on the plates and allows for smoother tuning...you may never see them...but they are there, and for a reason. We don't skip steps! So many of our competitors cut costs by using cheaply made tuners that turn roughly, easily bend, the plating flakes off, or no thought was given to their placement and installation. Why skimp on such important things? No corners have been cut in our bass's construction or finishing! German "hat peg" tuners can be installed...inquire for upgrade fees! We fit our own ebony fingerboards that are cut to our specs. Thick, straight grained and jet black...you won't find a higher quality ebony board anywhere. We actually wholesale supply our boards to other shops...they are that good! Our solo extended fingerboard is a stock option (exclusive UB feature...nowhere else is this available without paying extra customization fees!). Regular fingerboards can still be installed...just ask! High quality endpins are installed on all of our basses. Thick, solid ebony collars do not warp or crack like the ebonized hardwood endpins on our competitors basses. Threaded tips and steel reinforced rubber caps ensure years of performance. Your purchase price of $2,750.00 includes our full set up with your choice of strings (up to $140) and the Upton Bass 5 year warranty! Bridge adjusters, pickups and other accessories carry additional charges. Already have a bass with an E-flat neck??? Want your Upton Bass to have one?? We can customize your new bass with an E-flat neck for an upgrade charge of $500   Upon order each bass is set up by hand in our workshop, custom to your order. This is an important distinction as it has come to our attention that other double bass specialty shops farm out the setup work on their bass orders! Our setup luthiers spend time with you to get a feel for not only how you play, but what you play. You can be sure your UB Hybrid Double Bass will exceed your needs. You can be sure we set it up for you!   We have hyperlinked the setup items below to the items on our website. Add them to your cart and see the value of the Upton setup!   Upton Bass setups include: ?Top quality endpins are fit with removable metal threaded rubber tips. ? Your choice of strings (up to $140.00). Our luthiers can recommend string choices based on your style of play. Upton Bass has access to just about every string being offered today. Just because it is not listed on our site does not mean we can't get it for you. ? Stock Upton Bass bridges, made by our own Upton Bass luthiers, are meticulously carved, fitted, and tonally adjusted for each individual bass. The top radius of each bridge is custom carved to meet the specifications of your playing style. Once a bridge meets our standards, it is then branded with our logo. Adjusters are installed at an additional charge of $50.00. ? English style grade "AAA" ebony tailpieces are hung with Clef HITEC tailpiece cable. This lightweight, flexible cable is stronger than steel! After-lengths are carefully calculated and adjusted for the best tone. ? Seasoned European spruce sound posts are hand turned by us and fit by us to ensure each bass reaches its maximum tonal capabilities. Our sound posts fit 100%. No bevel! No domes! ? Fingerboards of the highest grade ebony are dressed and polished to perfection. ? Ebony nuts are brought to exact tolerances. Other than the bridge, the nut is one of the most important (and most overlooked) aspects of your setup. Incorrect string angles can prematurely break strings and cause buzzes. Incorrect spacing can make it difficult to play and grooves that are not well formed and lubricated can damage the strings. Incorrect string heights can not only make your bass difficult to play, but may cause long term medical problems! ? Each bass is played by our staff. If something is not quite right, it is done again until it is. Simply put, the level and quality of service we offer is second to none! I consistently get compliments on its excellent sound, and my Hawkes Hybrid always plays great and has been completely trouble free. I originally bought the Hawkes Hybrid as a second bass, but I like it so much that my fully-carved bass stays at home most of the time now. The Hawkes is a great instrument for a working bass player, and is amazingly rugged and stable, yet very warm and responsive. I've owned and played quite a few other basses, and there is nothing else in the same price range that even comes close to the Hawkes Hybrid. Upton Bass is also a great company to do business with, and the entire staff has always been exceptionally helpful and courteous. I would recommend the Hawkes Hybrid and Upton Bass to anyone. Rob R.- Ohio Thanks to all at Upton Bass for a great buying experience. As a bass guitarist looking to grow musically and learn a new instrument, your sales staff was great, answering all of my questions and walking me through the process of ordering and setting up my new UB Hawkes Hybrid. The bass arrived this week. I was very impressed with the way my instrument was packed for the cross-country trip by truck -- literally coast to coast. It arrived without a scratch and on the day promised. The bass looks and sounds great. I am delighted with every aspect of this experience. . .especially the end product.Mark S.
