Description
Selmer Tenor Saxophone MK VI model from mid-late 1960's. Serial number 140xxx, a very good period for MK VI. This horn is totally original lacquer, with normal wear from use, which makes sense because this horn is an excellent player. It is not a museum piece, but a true players horn with a huge sound. This one has "Mark VI" stamped vertically on the body which I was informed by Randy Jones of "Tenor Madness" was an indicator that this had been a horn designed for Selmer Varitone assembly. In this case there was never any Varitone equipment on this horn though. According to him, the horns designed and chosen for Varitone were both especially good, and also different in bore sizes than others of the period. According to him, he measured them and found them to be very similar to bore sizes of horns from the 80xxx range, which are considered very special. I have not measured it myself, but I can say that this horn IS quite unique in it's power and quality of sound. It is not what I expected from the time period, it is exceptionally good, with a powerful punchy quality, a fairly dark sound with a lot of volume and a bright edge. The photos tell the story of the condition, still has a lot of dark lacquer left and fine engraving. The horn has had some minor repairs, such as the alternate f# keyguard was knocked off and replaced, and someone removed (for what reason I cannot imagine) the lyre holder screw-socket from the neck collar. neither of these repairs have any effect or relationship whatsoever to the sound and playing characteristics of the horn, nor are they visually important or even particularly apparent.. I just had this horn completely overhauled by the great Ernie Sola out here. He went through the whole thing doing absolutely anything that was needed and then some. He replaced all the pads with black leather high quality pads and polished brass resonators that can be seen clearly in the photos. I think they might be resotechs, but I forgot. The brass resos sound loud yet not too bright, keeping the proper old school tone of this tenor. The pads seal with a pop all the way up and down the horn. This overhaul was done so well, that if you close all the keys with key clamps and then tap the rim of the bell, the whole horn rings with a note, its crazy, nothing needs to be done for years with this one. I do not think a better setup horn can be found anywhere. For a player, I dare say a better playing Mk VI will be hard to find. This horn is not for the closet, even though it looks very cool.
