STEINWAY SQ. GRAND PIANO, SERIAL #27368, CIRCA 1873, BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD - VICTORIAN/ LOUIS XV STYLE, 85 NOTES. DELIVERED FULLY REFINISHED WITH FULL INSTRUMENTAL RESTORATION. COMES WITH LTD. 5 YEAR WARRANTY. THIS PIANO IS A SIGNED PIECE - PERSONALLY SIGNED BY A STEINWAY PIANO FACTORY WORKER WHOSE SIGNATURE IS WRITTEN INSIDE THE PIANO This exquisite Steinway piano is being offered here on Ebay by Vintagegrandpianos.com - as a promotion for the restoration and sale of vintage pianos. We are now in the process of completing the piano's Full Restoration, which includes installation of all new strings and tuning pins, soundboard refinishing, keyboard restoration andrefelting, and complete cabinetry refinishing. After purchase, the piano can be delivered in December. This piano-when fully restored-has a fair market retail value of 25K minimum. We have been restoring squares and other grands for over 30 years. Please email us through Ebay system or email us at: Memaestro@aol.com .. or call 574-370-7430 with any questions you might have - we will be glad to help. This Steinway model has proven to be the most popular of all the Steinway square grand models-with it's 85 note ( the last three notes of the typical modern piano were not used in most classical type models of Steinway square grands) original real elephant tusk ivory keyboard, and with it's gently rounded cabinetry. It has bass string lengths comparable to a 'modern-type' 7 foot long concert grand. This Steinway's sound is best described as very full and rich tones in the bass section, very clear and resonant tones in the tenor (middle) sections, and clear and lighter tones in the treble. In contrast to the modern, s-shaped three legged grands, which are designed to produce a more brassy tone, this Steinway grand will produce a more mellow tone throughout it's scale, a more truly 'naturally acoustical' tone quality which is more 'in synch' with the pianos from the classical era, an era which glorified this 'classical sound'- an era which produced music from Mozart, Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, and Bach. Please click on the link above to hear a Steinway square in digital stereo -restored by us- it is an 85 note "Louis" model with the same playing mechanism and soundboard design. When restored, these have an incredibly beautiful sound. CONDITION OF PIANO: SUPERB -The piano's major structural components are: (1)case and mainframe- the piano's complete wooden case which includes a wood-beamed frame containing the tuning pin block (2) cast iron harp, (3) soundboard, (4) playing mechanism (also called 'the action')- (5) tuning pins block, bridges- (6) damper system- composed of pedal lyre, linkage, levers, etc. All of the piano's major components are being restored to excellent condition. During restoration, minor parts such as strings and tuning pins, various felts, etc., are being replaced. Note: replacing these minor parts greatly increases the performance and value of this instrument. (1) Case and mainframe: Rosewood case surrounds a strong wood beamed structure. Hand picked hardwoods were used to make the exterior of this piano. The origianl factory finish was ebony, and the piano has been refinshed in ebony as well. Constructed in a combination of Victorian/Louis XV style, the piano has the rare carved legs. The aesthetic quality of this stoic design is unsurpassed, and makes this piano a valuable work of art. The rosewood case is being refinished in semi-gloss, hand-rubbed with each of many coats rubbed down between successive coats. This 'old world method' is the best way to build the thickness of the finish necessary to achieve the deep lustre of this piano's finish patina. This Steinway frame design has perfectly maintained it's structural integrity for over 130 years. Similar to a well-constructed 19th century home which has endured and will probably outlast homes built in the 21st century. Please see the early 1900's vintage Steinway picture ad at the bottom of this listing and read the print: it is interesting to note that this ad 'speaks about' the longevity and indestructability of the Steinway piano -and that was about 100 years ago! The true test of quality is time, and the Steinway piano has proved beyond any reasonable doubt, in the minds of many piano builders, teachers, and players, to be possibly the very best piano that this planet has ever seen. (2) Cast iron harp: Probably the most important component of this Steinway piano. This harp is a Steinway foundry casting...considered by many to be the best harps ever made. This harp is a 'full harp' which encompasses the entire tuning pin area. The cross-strung 'full harp' is the strongest harp ever to be installed in square grand pianos. This harp has been constructed with numerous 'sound reverberation holes'..which allow the sound produced by the soundboard to escape and bounce around between the harp and the board...producing a warm resonance. Hand-painted in the Steinway factory - on the cast iron harp- are several small individual art-noveau floral abstracts. The cross-strung full harp was used in only a portion of square grands. It's name is derived from the string scale design where the bass strings 'cross- over' the treble strings and bridges. The basic 'cross-strung harp' design was so effective in structural integrity and sound production that it remains used in all Steinway grand pianos to this day. (3) Soundboard: The soundboard is in excellent condition with no separations. Constructed of solid Sitka Spruce- this vintage, type/quality used in only the world's finest instruments. Steinway's soundboards are hand-picked for grain configuration. The Steinway signature sound is created in large part..by the clarity of these outstanding producers of clear pure warm resonant tone...the Steinway soundboard. This soundboard has excellent tonal resonance, and will be fully Warranted with purchase. (4) Keyboard action-playing mechanism: The keyboard has original ivory keys and has real ebony keys as well. To ensure proper play, this keyboard playing mechanism has been built equippped with adjustment options for regulating various movements of the hundreds of moving parts. Proper adjustments are being made to ensure ease of playability. Original felt hammers are in incredible condition, and produce a very clear tone. (5) Tuning pin block, strings, bridges: The tuning pin block is in excellent condition. New tuning pins and new strings restore the piano's resonance and proper tunability-. Both bass bridges and the treble bridge are in excellent condition and continue to perform their structural purpose of supporting the strings and transmitting sound to the soundboard. (6) Damper system: pedal lyre, linkages, and top damper assembly comprise the damper system... all will be adjusted to proper regulations, and are in excellent condition.   THE STEINWAY SQUARE PIANO AS AN INVESTMENT: Having restored many Steinway square pianos over the last 4 decades, I have been very aware of the market value of these instruments 'as time goes by.' During the past five year period, the value of a ( recently) fully-restored Steinway square grand piano is now, in today's marketplace has risen from approx. 15-20K- to 25-40K -retail -in 2008, depending on the model. The term fully restored includes complete instrumental restoration and complete refinishing. Equally important is the fact that these vintage Steinways -in the fully restored condition- are 'very much in demand.' It is the restoration which gives the pianos their value. This segment of the piano market- the highest quality vintage pianos- including Steinway, squares.( and a few other makes as well-)-is the fastest appreciating segment of the piano industry today. Attributing the recent popularity of the Steinway square in part-to their stunning beauty, 'classical-like' warm resonant tone, and extreme rarity, I strongly feel that the Steinway Square Grand will continue to rapidly increase in value during the next several decades and beyond. Three reasons why this Steinway square grand piano is an excellent investment: (1) Purchasing this piano will result in the purchase of an extremely rare vintage Steinway instrument at a cost significantly below market value, at a savings of many thousands. The new owner will purchase the piano for under 10K, and receive this Steinway piano delivered restored with a market value of 25-30K minimum. (2) The piano's incredibly fine condition, including rosewood cabinetry, Victorian and Louis XV styling, with hand-scrolled music desk and hand-hewn legs and pedal lyre, tonal beauty, etc. will cause it's value to rise over the years. (3) The Steinway name on a vintage piano is like solid gold. Pianos manufactured by Steinway have an unflawed history of increasing value, and today's market is moving to higher values at a faster rate than anyone could have logically predicted. At this point in time, vinatge pianos -especially Steinway pianos- and a few others-are appreciating in value so significantly that they are rivaling and succeeding many other traditional forms of investment in real financial returns.   When the bidder opts for purchase with the 'Buy It Now' price, the buyer will elect to receive the Steinway 'delivered to their door' for an all-inclusive price, with a long term FIVE YEAR LTD. WARRANTY. The retail market value of the delivered Steinway will be 25- 30K minimum. At a purchase price of under 10K - INCLUDING DELIVERY- one can readily 'see the value' here. This specific Steinway square grand- an extremely rare Brazilian rosewood cabinet, refinished in semi-gloss sheen, with full instrumental restoration...a Steinway 85 note original ivory and ebony keyboard, with Louis XV styled cabinetry, will be a treasure for generations to come.   ABOUT SQUARE GRAND PIANOS: HISTORY AND NEW PRESENT-DAY INTEREST: The Square Grand Piano has come full circle in it's journey through History..the square...once very popular in both musical and cultural circles..is regaining it's respect after a long decline in use. The square piano originated in Europe as an evolutionary step from the harpsichord - which had the same basic case shape - to the first pianofortes - the world's first generation of pianos which were of Viennese origins. The Viennese pianos had a rectangular case shape and had four legs, like the harpsichord - but contained a playing mechanism with 'hammers' which struck the piano's strings instead of using the harpsichord's method of 'plucking' them. This important change in design resulted in a much more melodic and less metallic tone produced from felt hammers striking the strings. The pianoforte- the first piano prototype- was 'born'. When European piano makers came to America in the 19th century, they began making various pianos, including a new hybrid - the Square Grand. Since many of the 'newfound American' piano makers were German, many Viennese and German piano-making designs were incorporated into the 'new square grand.' It had improvements such as an iron plate, stronger keys, larger and sturdier frame, and longer strings for a bigger, more deep and more resonant sound. These pianos were very popular during their period of manufacture and were often designed with a beautiful combination of Viennese and Victorian influences in their 'highly-carved cabinetry.' Classical pianists performed concerts with these 'new square grands.' Artists purchased them for their parlors and they became status symbols for the 'highly-cultured' as well. Squares lived their grandest era until after the turn of the century -1900. Three-legged grands and upright pianos had begun to replace the square as louder, more brassy sounding pianos became the status quo. Also, the 'newer grands' had actions with faster repeating notes and larger thicker iron plates capable of producing louder and different sounds from strings stretched to a much higher tension. Concert halls boomed with powerful concert grands, as these pianos could play to larger concert hall venues. For nearly 100 years the modern grand - as we call it- has retained it's throne in both musical performance and design. However, as the 1980's decade proceeded, there was a revival of 'early classical' music, and a renewed interest in the instruments which were played during the 1800's. Musicians began touring with their hand-made reproductions of Viennese pianofortes- a close relative of the square grand piano. Universities became interested in promoting the playing of music of 'original instruments' from the classical period....hence the renewed interest in square grands began. Steinway (and other) square grands were given attention in the Smithsonian, where they resided. Square grands began emerging from stately mansions and were brought to my shop for restoration. During the 1990's, this interest spilled over into the 'musical public' - including accomplished 'classical music' enthusiasts, and avid collectors of American Art pieces. The Square Grand had regained it's respect and proper place in History as well as the present day. Even today..most people have neither seen nor heard a square grand which has been restored...but when they finally do experience the beauty of actually seeing and hearing the beauty of a Square Grand, they are usually amazed. In 2008, you would be more likely to see a square grand piano at a performance outside rather than inside the museum environment.   BUYING A PIANO LISTED ON EBAY: 7 IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK: (Q #1) CREDIBILITY - WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE COMPANY?
