Sanken Microphones CUW-180 Dual Card Condenser Microphone As the newest model in a comprehensive line of high quality microphones for recording and broadcast, the breakthrough CUW-180 is two exceptionally engineered cardioid condenser microphones combined in one compact body. Each of the two capsules is independently adjustable with 15 detent, providing a versatile microphone for a variety of stereo and Surround recording applications. For stereo recording, such as common X-Y configurations, the precise alignment of both capsules maintains optimum on-axis response and phase coherence. The CUW- 180 can also be used in interview situations between face-to-face participants, in a bi-directional figure 8 design, but with full independent control of each signal. It is important to note that two microphone capsules joined in one body creates an ideal stereo configuration because the actual physical design takes into account the effect of the microphone body itself, as opposed to two separate microphones which are not physically designed to work adjacent to one another. The advanced physics employed in the operation of the CUW-180 utilizes extensive research conducted with NHK and furthers the Sanken legacy of incorporating new and innovative design concepts. For Surround applications, two CUW-180 mics can capture 4 channels of Left, Right, Surround Left, Surround Right program simultaneously, with four independently adjustable signals. Surround sound for broadcast and film has become quite popular, but creating realistic multi-channel soundtracks in post-production from traditional microphone sources has proven problematic, time consuming, and unnatural. Two CUW-180s are ideal for true four-channel recording, providing a conceptually simple method of recording both Front L/R and Rear L/R signals. In the Sanken Surround system, one microphone is used for front L and R, while a second microphone is used for rear SL and SR. The essential phase coherence for L and R is rigidly maintained, while allowing the front and rear dual microphones to be positioned for the particular situation. To add another source for a hard front Center channel, an optional mic holder is available, and Sanken offers a complete line of shotgun microphones which can be utilized for this purpose. For location Surround recording of music, documentaries and sports, a variety of windscreens and shockmounts are also available. The entire compact Sanken Surround package can be mounted on one mic stand or hand grip and weighs approx. 1.3 kg.
