Description
An Auction from Hornguys.comCustom made bass trombone from S.E. Shires This is a custom built bass trombone pitched in Bb/F/D/Gb. It was built by the S.E. Shires company in Hopedale, Massachusetts (which is outside of Boston) by some of the finest brass craftsmen in the world. The S.E. Shires company was founded by Steve Shires in the late 1990's to build the ultimate professional trombones. These instruments are modular, making them fully customizable without having to go to your brass technician to solder and fit various parts. The Shires modular system gives a variety of options for the trombonist. This allows you to quickly tailor the instrument for your sound concept by exchanging various components. This particular bass trombone is a combination of new and used parts from our shop. We are one of the largest authorized Shires dealers in the country and have the most popular options in stock. We tried to assemble a collection of components that would be ideal for a bass trombonist looking to do both commercial and orchestral playing. We've included two bell flares with different metal thickness, alloys and tapers to allow the player some options. The bell flares included in this auction are a Shires BII 2YHWT7 (which is a bach style tapered bell made of yellow brass, heavier guage metal with a thin rim wire and an unsoldered rim) and a Kanstul 1662 gold brass bell. Both are 9.5" in diameter. The BII 2YHWT7 bell is ideal for orchestral playing. The yellow brass bell will facilitate a well rounded sound with clear and clean partials. The unsoldered rim gives a warm timbre to the overall sound while the thin bell rim wire gives flexibility and ease of notes slotting where they should. The heavier thickness of this bell gives a strong centered orchestral sound that will be less likely to break up at loud volumes. The heavier bell balanced with the lighter rim wire and unsoldered flare gives a great combo of clarity and breadth of sound. The other bell flare included is a Kanstul 1662 Symphony model bell flare. This bell is designed after the famous Elkhart Conn 62h horns of the late 1960's and early 1970's. The Conn 62H has long been the favorite bass trombone of commercial bass trombonists such as Bill Reichenbach and George Roberts. This particular bell uses this same taper as the Elkhart 62H. It is thin gauge (.020" thickness) gold brass with solder in the rim. This bell has been double buffed and remains unlacquered to bring it closer to the Elkhart Conn sound. The soldered rim gives the bell some clarity with a compact and colorful tone. The sound is warm but remains snappy, perfect for a studio setting, big band or light orchestral work. This bell has been fitted with the Shires mounting system and will fit on any Shires bass trombone valve set. The valves are Shires inline axial valves. These valves are lightly used, showing some minor contact wear on the places where your hands touch. These valves are made in house at the Shires factory and are modeled after the O.E. Thayer valves from Ed Thayer. Shires makes one of the nicest axial valve sets on the market. They are not too heavy, have terrific valve action, an excellent valve seal and sound great! This set includes a black leather neck protector as well. The slide is a new Shires dual bore B6278 slide. This slide features yellow brass outer tubes, nickel silver end crook and a dual .562"/.578" bore size. We found this slide to be a good match with the bells and valve section of this horn. The slide includes 3 threaded leadpipes (Shires B1, B2, B3). A new Eastman Strings hardshell case is included. Your choice of color between silver and blue.
