The * looks like a 9 but according to the Henley Dictionary, this Master worked from 1718-1769. I believe this label to be authentic and the violin made by this Master. He is well thought of in the Henley: "Best Saxonian maker of his period...Arching of medium flatness, backs sonetimes less arched than fronts. Frequently one piece backs of well figured material.....Light shade of golden brown varnish...Tonal quality easily produced, full, sonorous capacity..." All of that describes this violin to a tee!!! The violin has many quality features including fine inlayed purfling with bee-sting corners, well cut f-holes and the instrument is lined and blocked. The wood is fine grain spruce on the table with lovely flamed maple on the ribs, back, neck and scroll. The scroll is Master cut, fine and deep. The pegs match and work fine. There are age scratches to the original golden/amber oil varnish. There are numerous professional repairs to the table including near the soundpost.  In spite of that the violin is in good health and is ready to play! The sound is big, warm and full, even on all strings and excellent in the higher positions. The G string remains clear and warm to the end of the fingerboard.
