This 3 string sape is playable with the proper tuning. It is decorated with fine Dayak Aso dragon carvings, fern art and floral art for the top finishing. This is an authentic piece of art found only in Sarawak, Borneo. MeasurementHeight: 64 cm / 25.2 inchesWidth: 13 cm / 5.1 inchesAbout the SapeThe sape comes from the lute family, a stringed instrument with a short neck. It is made from soft meranti wood only found in the jungles of South East Asia. The sape has quite an elongated body which is hollowed out and functions as a resonator. The shape of the body looks like a boat and is often called "the boat lute" in Western countries.The Kayan and Kenyah tribes are mainly seen playing such instruments in Sarawak, Borneo. Originally sape strings were made from the Sago tree but now these have been replaced by nylon strings. You may also use fine nylon fishing line which is also commonly used. I have strung it with light gauge high-E guitar strings for a clearer sound.This fine carved sape is very fragile so packaging will be done with extra care and protection.
