Description
Wichita Band Instrument Co. 2525 East Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67211, USA tel (316) 684-0291; FAX (316) 684-6858 E-mail wbic@wichitaband.com and RARE TRUMPET BY JOHN PARDUBA, MADE IN NEW YORK BEFORE 1940… In business for more than half a century, our small music shop in Wichita has sold hundreds of Parduba trumpet mouthpieces over the years. But this is the first Parduba trumpet we’ve seen. And that makes it a bit rare, in our opinion. Can’t remember ever seeing one like it… Bell section is engraved (not stamped, but hand-engraved) “Supratone / Extra / Special / hand made / trade JP mark / J. Parduba / - maker / New York”. Valve casings are stamped “ 1 , 2 , 3 “ and “7564 / J. Parduba / New York” and “ML”. Pistons are also stamped “1 , 2 , 3 “ plus serial number 7564. Valves are nickel plated and are tight. No plating wear, no need to re-plate or re-build. We measure the bore size as .460, at the second slide. Bell diameter is 4.5 inches, with heavy bell ring. Top and bottom valve caps are brass, in good condition without scar marks of any kind, save for a small scuff to the top #2 cap. Finger buttons are nickel plated over brass and appear to be the originals. The trumpet’s wears the original O-ring first slide throw, with French-style stop ring. The stop-ring nuts and rod are solid nickel-silver and appear also to be original. No third slide ring or throw, though. Original water key on the main tuning slide, but not on #3 slide. The instrument shows signs of superior workmanship throughout, as evidenced by the bell-to-mouthpipe S-braces that are constructed of heavy brass wire brazed to nickel-silver flanges. No thin spots, patches or damage anywhere, but the trumpet came to us with a couple of minor dings to the bell spout. No other damage, the dings quickly burnished out in our shop. The instrument is unlacquered and does not appear to have ever been plated or lacquered. We believe it came from the maker in yellow brass. Thinking it might be comparable in weight to a modern Bach 180ML, we’ve weighed both trumpets. A new Bach weighs exactly two pounds 7.0 ounces. Our Parduba is 3.5 ounces lighter in weight. Not what we expected… The “New Langwill Index” of William Waterhouse mentions only a few words, “Parduba, John, New York c. 1925 – past 1950… Brass instrument mouthpieces, employed ‘Supratone’ as trade name.” There’s a bit of info on the internet about Parduba’s trumpets, but not much. According to the I.T.G. Journal of December, 1996… ”The instrument of choice for Harry Glantz from 1929 to 1940 was a Parduba B-flat trumpet. It suited his needs for the great amount of radio work he played during that period. He preferred its much larger bore (?) to the prevailing Besson for the heavier nineteenth-century orchestral works he performed with the New York Philharmonic…” There’s bound to be people out there who know more about Parduba’s instruments than we do and we’d appreciate hearing from them. In the meantime, this one’s in fine original condition, shows signs of superior workmanship and we have… No hesitation in recommending this one. ***** Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. We’ve been in business since 1953 and have had the same owner since 1963. Originally we were a repair shop that specialized in wind instrument restoration. Today we have 18 employees including eight of the finest repair technicians in the country. Virtually ALL the items we sell have been fully reconditioned in our own shop, although we do sell a few unrestored historical instruments each year. It’s sometimes possible to buy a good cornet, trumpet or t-bone on Ebay for a low price, but unless that instrument has been fully reconditioned by a reputable shop, you won’t know how it plays until you spend another few hundred to have it mechanically overhauled. With an instrument from OUR shop, you know it’s in the finest condition when it arrives at your home! Wichita Band’s service warranty is the same as it’s been for more than thirty years: “ALL new and all used instruments sold by Wichita Band Instrument Company come with our 24 month service warranty. It’s in addition to any factory guarantees. For two full years, we will repair or replace, whichever in our estimation is the more advisable, pads, corks, springs or other parts required, at no charge to the customer. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance charges. Cases and plating finishes are not covered by our service warranty but are sometimes covered by factory guarantees.” Wichita Band’s service warranty does cover dents and dings to your instrument. If your instrument sustains damage to the body, end bow, neck, slides or bell, we’ll burnish out the dents and make it look “like new” again. The cost you is absolutely nothing except for shipping and insurance charges. Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953! In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer. Anything we sell can be sent to you for a short approval period without obligation. We collect NO SALES TAX, unless you’re lucky enough to live in Kansas. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance and must pre-pay back to us any freight charges on returned equipment. International shipping is available. Returned items will be refunded within 3 weeks of receiving the item. We’re happy to send any instrument “on approval” for five days, but ask the prospective buyer to pay shipping both ways and to please reimburse us for posting, clean-up and re-stocking charges (2.95%) on any returned instrument. VISA/MASTERCARD/DISCOVER/MONEY ORDER/CHECK/WIRE TRANSFER ACCEPTED. Credit cards not accepted from some countries. We must ship to the credit card billing address with exceptions made only at our discretion. We’re happy to correspond with musicians, players, parents and enthusiasts of all types. Written appraisals are always available, but please don’t write or telephone and ask “what’s granny’s baritone sax worth?” Do an Ebay search and you’ll be able to figure it out for yourself.
