Also lengths of these variant tuned nays are different. In addition they are called with the chord system that they are tuned to. Nay Types: Name of Nay Tune lenght (average) Bolâhenk Nisfiye [ E ] 520 mm. Bolâhenk-Sipurde Mâbeyni [ E b ] 550 mm. Sipurde [ D ] 580 mm. Mustahsen [ C# ] 620 mm. Yıldız [ C ] 665 mm. Kız [ B ] 710 mm. Kız-Mansur Mâbeyni [ B b ] 745 mm. Mansur [ A ] 780 mm. Mansur-Şah Mâbeyni [ A b ] 820 mm. Sah [G ] 860 mm. Dâvud [ F# ] 910 mm. Dâvud-Bolâhenk Mâbeyni [ F ] 970 mm. Bolâhenk [ E ] 1040 mm. BOLAHENK NISFIYE, SIPURDE, KIZ and MANSUR are mostly used chord types in Turkish Classical Music. So, Neyzens (Nay players) usually use these kinds of nays. Nays that are longer than Mansur are mostly used for solo performances. Learners generally start with kiz or mansur nays. Kiz and Mansur nays are a little longer than average. Thus, if neyzen plays these nays correctly, he will feel more comfortable while using shorter nays. ____________________________________________________ BASPARE Baspare: That is an item which is lathed with different diameters and put upper part of the Nay to get clear sound. Used Materials: Baspare, which is actually needed to be produced from horns of water buffalos, is produced from some other materials due to lack of the original material that can not be obtained in enough amount and dimensions. Our workshop uses –as it is wished- horn or a special material which is the nearest to physical structure, hardness and tone of horn. Sizes: Our Baspares have 6 different Baspare bottom (Part that is put to reed) diameters as 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 millimeters. 18,19,20,21 mm –measured- Baspares’ mouth diameter is 16,5 mm and 22, 23 mm –measured- ones’ mouth diameter is 17mm. Tone Features: Inner reservoir depth and needed smoothness are carefully provided in our Baspares. Because, smoothness and brightness of baspare, which conveys breath to the voice box, provides a clear and bright tone. Outer form of Baspare: We deal with getting the nearest Baspare form to the average form also caring about that each Neyzen prefers a different Baspare form. Outer form of Baspare has a smart appearance. Its cheek slope and smoothness is made with care because of letting lips provide a comfortably performance on Baspare. Baspare and Voice Box: The part of Baspare which is put to reed is opened cylindrically. The most sensitive part of Nay, the voice box (1st node of reed) should completely be put in the cylindrical bottom part of Baspare. Because of that, the part that our Nays touch to Baspare is thinned with Baspare foot thickness measure (1mm). Consequently, the set which is because of the part of the Baspare that is put to reed is put away and breath is changed into voice (NEVA) without coming across to any set in voice box. VIEWS OF BASPARE HORN (BOYNUZ) BASPARE DERLIN (PLASTIC) BASPARE STORY OF NEY Ney is a very old east origin instrument. History of nay is not certain but there are stories about it. Charles Fonton explain us history of nay in his book; “Feriduddin Attar, writer of lots of great books, connects invention of nay with the time of Prophet Mohammed in his book “Mantıku’l- Tayr”. According to Feriduddin, one day prophet Mohammed told a secret to his son-in-law, Ali, near a well. After the prophet left, Ali bended down and repeated the secret to inside the well. Then, Allah created an extremely long reed inside that well. A shepherd, who saw that reed cut top of it and made a flute (NAY) for himself. After some time, the shepherd met the Prophet and played him his flute. Prophet heard the secret which he had told to Ali from the nay while everybody was hearing music. When Ali realized that great miracle, he became more grateful to God because of his own love and faithfulness to the Prophet. Muslims show great respect to reed since that time. They may be still thinking that, Nay is repeating sacred words of Prophet Mohammed. Because of all these thoughts nay has religious, mystic and ethical features. Masnawi of Jalaladdin is completely about this subject. Dervishes who pray while whirling believe that book which is written by their master is very special.”(1987, p. 80) .......................................................................................................
