Description
Native American Flute - TRIPLE Drone - F#minor tuningDated & signed by flutemaker Pat HaranLight-colored extremely resonant base wood with cedar laminated accents. This is a triple drone flute which means it has THREE barrels that can be played all at once, or in any combination.Barrel 1 is tuned and played in the traditional mode of a six-hole Native American Flute (NAF).Barrel 2 is a drone - plays one note (or it's octave, blown harder) which is the tonic or root note - the first note of the scale, the same as Barrel 1 with all holes closed.Barrel 3 can be played with either a harmonized third or fifth (or not at all) - it's played with your thumb as your left hand fingers the top of Barrel 1.  Takes a little getting used to, but you'll pick it up quickly. The original and best use of the Native Amrican Flute is playing on it's own and for yourself.  If you are looking at this drone, you probably already know that, but the multiple options of ways to play this flute will give you hours of musical contemplation, meditation and experimentation.  Because of the way the mouthpiece is designed, you can play just barrel 1, barrel 1 and 2 (the drone), barrel 1 and 3 (the 3rd or 5th harmonizing notes), or all three, with either the 3rd or 5th harmonization on barrel three.I'm making this sound more complicated than it is.  Because of the way Native American flutes are tuned, and because of the way barrels 2 & 3 are designed, it's easy to do just about anything and make pleasing music!  I also have triple "side-by-side-by-side" triples, and this one is much easier to learn and play easily - ingenious design, Pat!Which reminds me - the flutemaker, Pat Haran.  I met him early on in my flute journey, and his flutes just get get better and better.  Pat has been making flutes for almost 20 years, and has invited input from other flutemakers (including Hawk Littlejohn, Hopi flutemaker Earnie Northrup and Ernie's grandfather, and Mac Lopez) as well as performing musicians, which has led him to his current philosophy about making flutes.  In Pat's words:"Over the years as my flutes evolved, and improved, I would receive requests from flute musicians who wanted native style flutes that offered more performance. These requests centered around three items that are now central to my flute making: voice, range and response.""They were requesting a voice that was big and clear. A range that on a minor scale flute, included a complete relative major (do, re, mi...) scale starting from the third harmony (bottom hole open); and a response that allowed the player to push the flute beyond the traditional limits with aggressive playing techniques, for genres such as jazz and blues."By the way - F# is a great tuning if you are thinking about playing with other instruments because you can read the music as you would the standard NAF "tab" system, and it will be the same notes as a piano or guitar - no transposing. If you don't have a Native American Flute, this isn't your first flute.  But if you already play, and don't have a drone, this is the next one you need in your collection!  eMail me with any questions - I am a performing and teaching NAF player, and am always glad to share what I can.Robert Sweetriver BellusOn Sep-01-08 at 10:26:36 PDT, seller added the following information: Addition to the listing in answer to a bidder's question: The flute is 23 " long.  I should have added that to the description.  The accents and lamination are red cedar. I don't have a sound file, and am traveling and not where the flute is, but I'll get someone to go over to the house do a quick recording and if you would like me to send it to you, let me know.
