Roy Orbison holds a unique position among American musical icons. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, he is one of a handful of musicians acknowledged as a bona fide triple-threat: an extraordinary singer, a world-class songwriter, and a great guitarist. Roy's career spanned four decades, from his early days at Sun Studio along with contemporaries Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, through the '60's touring with The Beatles in the U.K, and into the ’80’s behind a resurgence which included collaborations with Emmylou Harris, Bruce Springsteen and k.d. Lang. While the riff from "Oh, Pretty Woman" alone guarantees Roy a place in guitar history, his musical impact is truly formidable, with #1 hits charted around the world. Roy’s final triumphant collaboration was with good friends George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty in the Travelling Wilburys. The Roy Orbison ES-335, the newest edition to our Inspired By Series, is based on the early '80's ES model that he used in the studio and on-stage with the Travelling Wilburys. This unique and collectible instrument was immortalized in the televised concert, "Black & White Nights" (1987). Gibson engineers inspected two black ES-335's that Roy used during this period and in consultation with Roy's wife Barbara, incorporated the specifications to develop this one-of-a-kind guitar. Production Of This Guitar Is Limited To 70 Pieces Honoring Roy’s 70th birthday. This Guitar Is The 3rd One Made From The Total 70 Production Roy Orbison covered a wide range of musical styles, from rockabilly to straight-ahead rock to soaring ballads.
