Description
3 wood Guardala mouthpieces which were designed specifically for Michael Brecker exist...and I have ALL 3. I listed this piece last week with a reserve...and the reserve wasnt met, though the bids went up to $3850. My reserve was $5000. Ebay Item number: 140239320211 A Meyer Bros alto mouthpiece auction ended a couple months ago for $4000. I understand guys love those mouthpieces, but in terms of collectibility, the 3 wood Guardalas I have here obliterate ANY other collectible mouthpiece out there by leaps and bounds. Thats why I got so many bids and interest on this piece last week. Many wrote me and asked the reserve, and I wouldn't disclose that, as I wanted to see where the auction would go. I have decided to list it as a buy it now and skip the reserve auction. Without arguement...this is the rarest, most collectible mouthpiece ever offered on ebay. My friend Jeff Powell, called me and told me he had these mouthpieces, and that I was his choice in sellers to get first shot at owning them. Jeff was Dave Guardalas partner, and was there to see it all. Jeff is the genius behind the genius! Jeff told me that Dave made Michael Brecker 3 handmade wood Guardala Brecker mpc's, upon Michaels request. These were designed specifically for Michael, with Michaels exact facing that he liked, and made from a very thin wood which resonates similar to Daves thin metal handmade pieces. The rails are unmistakingly "DAVE". The facing work is Dave's---- and arguably the best out there. This is the equivalent tip to a Selmer H, and an otto link 8 tenor. Jeff sent the 3 pieces out to have the shanks finished and fitted with a silver band. They dont have any cracks at the shanks, but banding is always a good idea on wood and rubber mpcs. I have a letter from Jeff Powell explaining all of this, and verifying all of this. The sound on the pieces is unbelievable and to me...PERFECT. Its got all the sound that the metal Guardala Breckers have, but all this color and nuance like a wood or rubber mouthpiece--- unbelievable! This mpc is very free blowing, full, colorful, rich, and speaks incredible well in all the registers. It is effortless, and for lack of a better phrase..."It plays itself". Michael LOVED these pieces but was so use to playing his metal pieces, that he stuck with the metal version. Michael had Dave and Jeff hold onto a private stash of pieces he used as back ups in case something happened to his main pieces. I have one of those metal Breckers here that I got from Jeff, and it will be for sale, eventually. Jeff had all 3 of these wood mouthpieces, and decided it was time to let them go. You arent going to find anymore Guardala wood mpc's out there that were made for Mr. Brecker, as I own all 3. Don't take lightly Michaels contribution to the saxophone. He is the father of the modern sax sound, and truly bridged the old with the new. He has done more for the saxophone than anyone since Coltrane, in my opinion. This piece is a remarkable player and was indeed made for and played by Michael Brecker. They were put away for many years, and now I will offer this one for auction. Once these are gone, there will be no more...This is truly a real piece of history for both Brecker and Guardala fans. If this piece does not sell, I will be using it as a trade piece for a horn or preferably, a bunch of vintage mouthpieces. The next collectible mouthpiece I will be offering is a bari mouthpiece owned by GERRY MULLIGAN. I have a letter of authenticity from Gerrys estate, from Gerrys' wife, verifying this was indeed his.
