THE STRANGER'S STORY OR WHY DO OUR LOVED ONES LEAVE US (date uncertain of this music-- see discussion below) - composed by E. T. Paull. Published in New York City. Very nice lithograph on the cover by A. Hoen and Co. of Richmond, Virginia. Before Ben Hur March, Paull had tried has hand at song writing with minimal success. Subtitled "Why Do Our Loved Ones Leave Us?", this waltz was one of the last of the early efforts of the composer/publisher at song writing. It describes a man encountering a happy gathering being asked to tell his story. It turns out that he had lost his three children, then his wife due to the sorrow, and would never be happy. This particular waltz tune boasts the most cover variations of any piece in the Paull catalog, having also been printed as an instrumental. This version may be a WWI print sans lyrics from New York. The condition is FAIR. It is nicely intact and solid but there is some foxing which is particularly dark inside at the very bottom edge of the inserted middle page. There is also a chip at the lower right corner . The back cover offers a selected catalogue of Paull's march arrangements with descriptions in detail.
