UPRIGHT BASS SPECIALISTS... ON THE WEB SINCE 1997 Great Prices + Knowledgable Help + Quality Products + Super Selection + Fast Shipping = HAPPY Customers! Bass Master ProDouble Bass Pickup System The Bass Master Pro Combo Package combines K&K Sound's highly-regarded and very popular Bass Max and their Double Big Twin pickups (which we also sell), allowing you to mix them using the tiny, lightweight two-channel preamplifier that is also included. The Bass Max is a specially designed two trandsucer "sandwich" that slips into one wing on the side of the bridge. This pickup has a very even frequency response and natural sound, with a solid midrange that is especially useful when you need to cut through the mix. The Bass Max is also very clean, with the string sounds not quite as overtly "defined" as with the Double Big Twin (see below)... a perfect blend of clarity and warmth. It's a great all-around pickup that will provide the meat and potatoes of your sound. The Double Big Twin has four transducers attached to the face of the bridge - near each string - using a special double-stick adhesive. Its sound provides the seasoning to the Bass Max; you can dial in more or less of its special character to contribute to the solid bass sound. It also works very well soloed in order to get that "modern jazz" sound. The strength of the Double Big Twin is its clarity and definition, but it still has a nice body to it with the detail, not that typical thin piezo sound. This pickup captures the nuances of the bass, so you hear the sound of the instrument, not the pickup - and the sustain is wonderful! It's not that fat, somewhat blurry sound I was used to, but the more accurate sound of the strings' interaction with the fingerboard. Having two different pickup points/designs helps to "open up" the sound of your instrument as well as offer a far wider range of tonal characteristics-- almost like listening with two ears vs. just one! You could draw a simple analogy to an electric bass' neck and bridge pickups - the complementary blend of the two units is very nice, and you can quickly and easily alter the balance of the pickups to achieve different sounds, depending on the type of music or selection. Likewise, with the Bass Master Pro, the different characters and placements of each pickup system provide a wider sound palette from which to choose. As a result, if you require a range of different tonal flavors during a performance for pizz or arco, or want different voices for different gigs, the Bass Master Pro is up to the task. The photo to the left shows the two pickup components of the system mounted on my Juzek bass. A group of four transducers (the same as those used by the Double Big Twin) are placed below the four strings of the bass, and a Bass Max is inserted into the E (usually) or G side wing of your bridge. It terminates to a stereo (3 conductor) jack; a five foot stereo instrument cable is included, to plug into the companion, dual channel preamplifier. I should also note, that in my case, I mounted the bridge string transducers on the bottom of my bridge, for cosmetic as well as practical reasons. Click on the magazine graphic to read a Bass Master Pro review from Bass Frontiers Magazine! While the close-up photo above makes the installation look a little cluttered, it's quite unobtrusive when seen in perspective. This is the same installation on my Juzek 3/4 size bass. The preamp that comes with the system has a belt clip, for easy availability and balancing on the job, and measures a mere 3.5 x 2.9 x 1.3 inches. (It's actually small and light enough to be mounted directly to the tailpiece; I've created this special page with simple instructions for a non-permanent, non-destructive method for mounting the preamp to your bass. That's where I put my preamp for convenient access and a quick setup/knockdown situation at a gig. I have special 1 foot TRS cable available at $16 if you want one, as well as longer TRS cables if the five footer supplied isn't long enough for you.) The two volume controls are at the top. Individual treble, bass, and master volume controls are inside the unit, which is powered by a 9 volt battery. A tiny screwdriver is attached by velcro on the inside, for adjustments to the internal controls. Includes: The integrated pair of pickups (Double Big Twin & Bass Max) A high quality five foot, three-conductor cable The compact 2 channel preamplifier/mixer Complete instructions, pickup mounting adhesive A special addendum from Bob to help you get the best sound and avoid feedback This pickup system is being offered for sale by Bob Gollihur of Gollihur Music, an authorized dealer for K&K Sound, so the full one year warranty applies on this brand new pickup system! Some Selected Customer Comments Good Evening Bob, I've been meaning to email you since the weekend but I've just being too busy playing with my new toy !! It arrived Saturday morning, (most impressive turnaround from order to delivery), was fitted Saturday afternoon, and was gigged on Saturday evening. This is the first time I've ever bought anything based purely on reading product reviews. To say I'm impressed by the pickup system (and your guidelines) is an understatement. It certainly is the business. The sounds and tones that can be achieved using that little preamp / mixer are just awesome. The rest of the guys in the band couldn't believe how different the sound was compared with when we just mike up the bass. I am suffering a bit from the feedback monster at times, but I must admit that I didn't spend all that much time setting up the preamp initially. I think I'll have a go tweaking it again to see if I can dial it out, I suspect the bass levels may be on the high side. Once again many thanks for you prompt turnaround and a superb product. Kindest Regards, Philip W***** 3-5-03 Just to let you know. I set up my Bass master Pro this weekend and everything is working perfectly(of course). That unit does an excellent job of faithfully reproducing the sound of my URB even with the G&K combo. It was amazingly easy to set up and needed almost no adjustments to get the sound to come out clearly. Thanks Again. Michael J. J***** 9-2-03 Hello again, Mr. G! Just thought I´d tell you the Bass Master Pro finally showed up, safe and sound. I slapped it on the Swingmaster without any troubles, and dear Lord, the sound just blew me away! Crisp, clear, round and full -- and as loud as I could ever want. Well, you know all these things already. Guess you were right about the Fishman (BP-100). Can´t even compare the two, the difference is so great. And would you believe it arrived only hours before a really important gig? Man, I´m gonna have some fun tonight! You have made me happier than a kid on Christmas. Thank you very very much!
