Description
This is for a 4000 series Heckel bassoon in excellent condition. Includes a Heckel bocal that is well matched to it (B1), original case and accessories. The instrument was overhauled by master craftsman Richard Polonchak who installed a new u-tube, did some revoicing, and repadded and adjusted keys as needed. (Polonchak is author of the "Primary Handbook for Bassoon" and has been repairing bassoons in his private shop since 1977.) This instrument has that characteristic Heckel tone color and is very responsive with a big sound. It is tuned to A-440 and plays easily throughout the full range, including up to high Eb. The keywork is traditional German system to high C with whisper key. It has beautiful striping, the original ivory bell ring, a body lock and a custom-designed insulated case cover from Altieri. The plating is in good condition, though there are some signs of wear and old repairs of a tenon that are merely cosmetic. This is not a flat-top; it is identical in appearance to later Heckels (they began to switch to the round long joint in the 4000 series) with a rubber-lined wing and boot joint (wet side only), and really projects well. The B series bocal was Heckel's first high range bocal, first produced just after WW2, and works extremely well with this instrument; however, if you would prefer a different Heckel bocal that would also be possible. The original Heckel double-crown stamp is present on all joints, as well as the bocal (see photos). This would be an excellent instrument for an advanced player and, with some minor and relatively inexpensive modifications (high D, E, and whisper lock), it would be suitable for professional use. Happy bidding.
