Description
Composer - Irving Berlin Rag Name - Alexander's Ragtime Band, March and Two-Step Year - 1911 Publisher - Ted Snyder, NY Other Info - In 1911, everywhere you went - dances, concerts, moving picture shows, theater, etc - you would hear "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Introduced as a song on vaudeville by Emma Carus, there were two big vocal recordings of it, Collins & Harlan on Victor and Billy Murray on Edison. Most of the time, however, you would hear it as an instrumental. For home consumption the song version of the sheetmusic probably outsold the 'instrumental only' version by more than 100 to 1! This piece remained popular enough that when the US entered WWI, the song "When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France" became very popular, and when the war was over "Alexander's Band is Back in Dixieland" was a hit. Over the years, there have been many take-offs, starting with "Alexander's Got a Jazz Band Now" in 1917. When Alice Faye sang the song in the 1938 movie of the same name, it became a hit all over again, as it did to a lesser extent in 1954 when it was sung by the entire cast of "There's No Business Like Show Business." In no possible way is this minimally-syncopated piece a rag, yet it is forever identified with Ragtime and the Ragtime Era. The clever strains of "Dixie" in the right hand against "Old Folks at Home" ("Way down upon the Swanee River") in the left hand are still contagious, and you will be re-infected when you listen! The following plays a midifile I created. You are welcome to listen to it as often as you please, but if you wish to use it publicly you need to get my permission. Condition - Several repaired tears on the front cover as well as staining at the top and a previous owner's name on the cover. The spine is separated and there is a small chunk missing from the lower right-hand corner. In the USA, I will ship insured, using First Class or Priority Mail with an inner envelope and in a stiff cardboard mailer. I will ship anywhere in the world. The packing for this weighs about 9 ounces. Each sheet you win adds 1.5 to 3 ounces to the weight of the package, and I ship by weight, so you can save a great deal in shipping by buying multiple sheets!
