I manage Caruso Music after having worked for some major musical instrument manufacturers for 12 years (including DW). My original foray into the musical instrument biz was running the drum department at the old Caruso Music in the 80’s/90’s. This kit was my 2nd personal DW kit, ordered in 1991. I played it for a few years, and it was delicately handled and lovingly cherished while in my ownership. I later sold it to a local drummer, who kept it in his climate-controlled home studio/rehearsal space. He brought it into us yesterday It’s hard to believe when you look at this kit that it is 17 years old.   The finish was inspired by a kit that Chad Wackerman played at a NAMM show in the late 80’s. He played a Dark Purple Metallic kit. Under stage lighting, the Purple coloration really POPPED! We took it a step further by having DW make this one Dark Purple Metallic, with a very sparse Mirra flake. The shells were sent to Randy May before shipping to CT…and he personally drilled and installed May microphones into each drum. I distinctly recall Randy calling me to say “I’m standing outside looking at the finish on one of your drums, and it has the effect of looking into the midnight sky…it’s blowing my mind”.   I really LOVE this era of DW drums. These shells were 6 ply with 6 ply reinforcing hoops. The thicker shells provide more stability than the current offering…and a bit more projection for heavy players. Additionally, the metal counter-hoops on toms/snare are a heavy gauge…giving the drums more focus without deadening them the way die-cast hoops might. There is one noticeable blemish on one side of the 14” tom (pictured). Aside from that, there is very minor wear on these drums.   The sizes and mics installed in each are as follows:   16x22 Bass Drum w/AKG D112 installed! 8x10 tom with Shure XL57 installed! 10x12 tom with Shure XL57 installed! 12x14 tom with Shure XL57 installed! 14x16 tom with Audio-Technica ATM25 installed! 8x14 snare drum with Audio-Technica ATM25 installed!   Included in purchase are two DW 9934 double-tom stands w/934 cymbal booms!   If you need ANY more detailed information regarding these drums, please feel free to call me at the store at 800.264.6614.
