Description
Civil War String Valve OTS Cornet I started the listing Wed. evening 7/2 and found a serious error in the search title that needed to be corrected. Nothing else is changed. This Rotary String Valve Civil War Cornet came from an Estate in Herndon, PA. It had been in the family attics for several generations. I was told by the Great Great Grandson of the original owner that it had belonged to his great great Grandfather, Henry Elmer Zeigler from Herndon and this and a Lehnert Cornet had been hanging in his Barber Shop after the War at a time when he must have quit playing. They had found early photos of the Barber Shop showing the Horns. They must have been sequestered to the attic since he passed on for a couple of generations. I briefly checked some Civil War and Gar records, there were many Henry Zeiglers that served so it's probably a mute point trying to determine any exact provenance. The Cornet This Instrument is totally original and in great shape. Untouched and not handled since the day it was retired. It was just extracted from the attic a few weeks ago. It is totally complete except for the Mouth Piece which was not found so far. I have owned horns of this period in the past and this example is far superior in condition to anything that I have seen in original condition. This instrument is not marked. It is 36 1/2 inches long including the ground rest with a 9 1/4 inch Bell that has a German Silver Garland. The tubing is virtually dent and tear free. The Front Tube is Dovetailed. All of the Instrument is Brass except the Garland, Joints, and Ground Rest which are German Silver. I only see a couple of very very mild pushed own areas on the top of the main Horn tube near the 1st Joint, those will be very simple to remove. A couple of tiny tiny digs on the edge of the center valve tuner tube. The Valves are complete and free, the Keys are all there and the return springs work. This can be made playable with a very straight foreward simple restoration. There is nothing missing except the Mouth Piece. This would be a prime Musemy display also as it is because of the great original condition. I may string the valves during the run and add or replace some photos so that you can see how they Keys should look when it's strung. This is going down the road without a reserve, but be aware that by holding back on bidding until the last second that you run the risk of me selling it elsewhere or raising the Start or BUY IT NOW price. Please scroll all the way down for photos, they are part of the description. Shipping is $70 plus Insurance as it will be oversize. I may be able to assist in delivery down Rt 15/11 in Central PA, Rt 79 to Pittsburgh, or Rt 17/86 towards Binghamton. Please ask first.
