Description
Up for sale is a circa 1917 WMS Haynes D flat Piccolo made in Boston, MA. This piccolo comes with it's original case. The piccolo measures just a smidge over 12 inches. Piccolo is sold as is. I am not an expert on instruments, and I have not attempted to play this piccolo. From a layman's view, the piccolo appears to be in very good condition. I've tested all the keys, and they move easily and smoothly. All the keys have their pads. The cork fitting is in great shape. This piccolo is marked WMS Haynes , Boston, Mass. The serial number is 4435, which I believe dates this piccolo to about 1917. There are also 5 script initials on both pieces of the piccolo.. I think they are U.S. and on the next line L.M.C. The body of the piccolo is ebony, I think. The grain lines can be seen running through the ebony... you can see this in the photos. There are two grain lines that look a tiny bit more substantial than the other grain lines... these areas are very minor... I have to look at the piccolo through a loop to really see them. I would not describe them as cracks because they look like deeper grain lines. I'm overstating this grain issue because I want to be as accurate as I can, and describe the piccolo accurately. I don't want you to have any surprises when you get this piccolo. This piccolo needs a good cleaning, but I will leave that to the buyer. I think the keys are silver... I see no brass coming through anywhere, and the patina looks a lot like aged silver. I did not test the metal... I'm taking an educated guess. The only other issue I want to mention is the color of the ebony on the two pieces. The mouthpiece is a bit darker than the other piece. This is probably caused by more skin contact on the keyhole piece, causing oils to darken the wood. It's not as noticeable as it appears in the photos. It may be remedied with a cleaning or an oiling. The case is in fair condition; the top and bottom are separate, and there is some wear on the outside. The red interior is intact, but it is a bit soiled. Please e-mail with any questions. We have a reasonable Buy It Now price for a quick sale. Shipping, including insurance, is $12.00. 9/25/08 On closer inspection of the case, I see that it is cracked on the end of the bottom and has a little wiggle to it. It could easily be glued, but I'll leave that to the buyer. Also, I brought the piccolo to a flutist and music teacher, and she said that the piccolo is in good shape and that the pads may need to be replaced because the piccolo was playing just a smidge low. She was playing it and it sounded pretty good! Wow, you sure can get some high notes out of a piccolo!. It is in a D flat key.
