Description
Allan Thomson guitar with Gibson & Fender strings on it   Out of my personal collection and owned by me since the early 1990`s and up for auction is the Allan Thomson guitar that I was told was built for the late Jerry Garcia member of the Grateful Dead band for over 30 years... HOWEVER even though Allan built the guitar with Garcia in mind we don`t know if Jerry Garcia ever took personal possession of it. So without any paper work or documentation that Garcia owned it I can only go by what one of Allan Thomson`s friend and fellow guitar builder told me about the guitar. By looking at the workmanship on it there is no doubt that this was made for a very special person.. So if anyone has a picture of Garcia playing this one or info about it let me know? Allan Thomson along with his friend the famous Doug Irwin both built guitars in northern California back in the 70`s thru the 1990`s.. Doug Irwin built the most famous guitars that Jerry Garcia ever played named Wolf, Tiger, and Rosebud.. "Wolf" which latter sold at auction for $789,500 and "Tiger"sold for $957,500...Both guitars were sold by Guernsey`s auction house and ebay May 8, 2002 for a total of $1.74 million. The very talented Allan Thomson who built guitars for Oasis guitars for a short time was also a master guitar builder like Doug Irwin. He left the company to further his guitar building carrier during the 70`s thru the 90`s. Allan Thomson built several intricate inlaid guitars that Stephen Stills of C.S.N still owns today, and only a handful of other Thomson guitars were built and exist since the unbelievable inlay work took 6 months to several years to complete... This guitar Thomson # 6 that is up for auction I was told is named "Mountain Girl" after Jerry Garcia`s second wife Carolyn Adams.. The abalone inlay work on the back of the guitar is of "Mountain Girl" riding Pegasus the Greek mythical flying horse.. Even though the REAL mountain girl had shorter hair, Thomson added long flowing hair on her for the visual effect of the inlay work on the back of the guitar...Also on the back of the neck are two beautiful inlaid dragons facing each other showing their sharp claws...On the fretboard are the beautiful inlaid vines and roses typical of the Grateful Deads tee shirts, posters, and album covers...And on the head stock of the guitar is a Dead Head type Skull with a rattlesnake rising up on top of the skull. Made over a period from1982/83 the guitar is made of mostly exotic Hawaiian Koa wood and maple with mahogany stringers thru the back of neck and headstock.. The fretboard is dark ebony with abolone inlays...It has 3 hi active pickups with an on board built in phase shifter powered by two 9 volt batteries with other wild sounds also controlled by the switches and knobs... This guitar comes in its original custom built case which is an Anvil Flight case serial # 7974 circa 1983...This guitar came from a high dollar estate in Sonoma county in the late 1980`s in a package deal along with an original 50`s Les Paul and some other rare guitars...Those guitars have been sold awhile ago . Even though I was told that Thomson`s # 6 guitar "Mountain Girl" was made for Jerry Garcia to play I have no documentation that he ever recieved it or used it with the Grateful Dead at any of their concerts.. This is why it is way less in price than Garcia`s famous documented Doug Irwin built guitars "Wolf" and Tiger" that sold at auction. However this guitar is still a beautiful piece of history of that same Dead Head era. If anyone has pictures or documentation with Jerry Garcia playing or holding this guitar let me know. I reserve the right to cancel any bid for any reason or end this auction early...Zero and Negative bidders may be cancelled.. Thanks for looking...
