This is the guy who stood up for the rights of every American to their own place in the American dream. From his time as a lawyer where he argued that “A man has as much right to cross the river as another man has to go up and down the river” and set the legal precedent for bridges all over America to sprout up replacing ferry services, to his famous “Emancipation Proclamation” – Lincoln faced issues and life head on, with a fierceness and directness and sense of humor and home-spun eloquence of simple down home common sense – that changed America and propelled him into the history books. He took time to chat with children, telling them it was their responsibility to raise parents with a conscience and kindness. There is even a story he asked the daughter of his opponent in an election to ask her father why he believed as he did – resulting in his changing his position on some issues, and Lincoln willing the election – true? Not? Either way it sounds like pure Lincoln.  Honest, direct, and seeking to achieve a better world with home-spun humor. Lincoln believed in principles and values and sought to try to convert, so much as possible, political process, education, and our nation back to fundamental principles and rights for the citizens. A self educated lawyer, politician, and statesman, Lincoln rightfully was known as “Honest Abe” as he truly did lead an honest and direct life. The rumor was that more than once his wife had to rescue him from his own honesty by stealing outbound email he had written to other men who he thought in the wrong detailing their stupidity. In essence, if true, we can probably thank his wife for changing the nation, as much as Lincoln himself, as if those letters had been delivered, he might never have gotten the chance to get elected at all, or become president. However, the same honesty and integrity that almost destroyed his future also made Abe one of the most trusted men in American history.  His bold willingness to debate, take strong clear positions, dispense common sense, and act in the best interest of the nation and its citizens, regardless of the difficulty it might bring, established his reputation as both trustworthy, and difficult. So into this time of strife, courage, and principle steps Abe who inspired both his supporters and enemies to love him, hate him, revere him, and in all cases, regardless of the choice, to write, create songs, books, cartoons, parodies,  and in general use ole Abe as ready material to make a buck off of. These collected works of Songs and Musical Compositions about or around Abe reflect the issues of the day, but more importantly, or equally so, preserve the beautiful art of the day that we the norm for first pages of Musical works to be embellished with, and the tunes and music of the day, much of which was a unique set of adaptations of older works brought into the new American musical traditions. Music that was bolder, simpler, and more lighthearted than many of the originals. It was as if all of American music wanted to reinvent itself and was just seeking an excuse to burst forth. A new song for every event in the news or nation, seemed to be the order of the times. Wow … In this collection of “Lincoln Music” you find some beautiful and Amazing Cover art or “first page” art of the time for music, and of course, tons of amusing and delightful tunes of the time. Imagine yourself listening back in Lincoln’s time, carriages, horses, heated debate of eloquent gentlemen – and political cartoonists even less kind than today’s critics and cartoonists. Enjoy Nice art, nice music, a journey into history. A delightful way to lose a few hours of life … into a period that changed the world, and a piece of history of the man who made it happen.
