Fashioned like a turtle, duck and lizard, each plays different tones. The ocarina is perhaps one of the most stylized instruments used by several cultures within Mexico, as well as Central and South America. Crafted of ceramic, ocarina features a resonance box with several perforations as well as a mouthpiece, which allows for a great variety of musical tones similar to the pitch of a whistle, but with the possibilities of a flute. Ocarinas of different shapes have been found in several archeological sites throughout the American continent, including burial grounds. Animal-shaped ocarinas were typically found in children's graves, which has led to the conclusion they were amongst their favorite toys.
