The cornet has a much richer more mellow tone, due mainly to its different construction. The cornet has a conical bore, which means it is narrowest at the mouth piece, and gradually increases to the bell. Other examples of conical bore instruments, include the Euphonium, Flugal Horn and the Tuba. On the other hand, a trumpet has a cylindrical bore, which means it is the same size, throughout the instrument, such as in a trombone. As a result, the cornet has much more mellow tone, as apposed to the trumpet, which has a more penertrating tone.
