Description
NO RESERVE! Original 1972 USA made Fender Jazz Bass! Looks just like Geddy Lee's '72 Jazz that the Fender Japan signature model is based on. This does have its original bridge, though, not a Bada**! Serial # 373381. All original: finish, parts, and frets. No date stamp on end of neck, as is fairly common by '72...this practice was being phased out at that time and would be completely replaced by the green code # system by '73. Matching early '72 date codes on all the pots: 304-7205, which translates to Stackpole potetiometers made during the fifth week of 1972. The last few digits of the code #s on bottom of pickups are over pole pieces and impossible to discern, but they're without a doubt original '70s pickups. Original Fender factory inspector name stamps on the end of neck and in the neck pocket. (See photos.) Four bolt neck, one piece maple neck and fingerboard with black block inlays used between '68 and early '74. Ash or alder body...at this point in Fender history, both woods were used, but alder was being phased out in favor of ash. I can only judge by the small patch of unfinished wood in the neck pocket and the weight. It's hard to tell for sure, but I believe that the body is ash. Excellent minus/very good plus condition, 8 on a scale of 10. Shows some minor wear, as you might expect to see on a THIRTY-SIX year old instrument...looks fantastic for a bass that old! Has had only one owner for the last 20 years. Some fairly minor scratches and a some small dings. There are some moderate belt buckle scratches on the back that don't show up in a photo well, but nothing terrible. Some light scratches on the neck plate as well. A small groove has been notched out on the body under the pickguard to facilitate easier truss rod adjustment, nothing terrible. A few minor marks on the back, VERY small wear spot (about 1/2" x 1/4") through the black down to the sealer coat on the back...neither are a big deal. The chrome pickup and bridge covers are missing, I didn't get them when I bought the bass. Almost no fret wear, just a tiny HINT of wear on the first few frets...not anywhere near enough to warrant a fret level. NO cracks or repairs. Electronics work perfectly. Estimated weight: around 9 - 9.5 pounds, medium weight for a '70s Jazz. LOW action, new Epiphone roundwound strings gauged .045-.105. Meticulously set up and intonated, ready to gig with! This is, without exaggeration, one of the BEST playing and sounding '70s Jazz Basses I've owned, and over the years I've had a LOT of them, although my personal taste leans more to pre-CBS Jazz Basses. Clean, clear piano-like rock tones as well as crisp, detailed finger poppin' funk! VERY straight neck, (rare to see on a '70s Fender bass!) no kinks or rise at the end of the fingerboard, allowing low action with very little buzz and NO dead notes up past the 12th fret! Truss rod works fine and is only tightened about 1/4 or 1/2 turn...that's all it needs to be perfect with this gauge of strings. Includes non-original late '70's molded Fender hardshell case in very good condition. (The lid restraining "thongs" have come loose so the lid opens up all the way, par for the course with these cases.)
