Description
This is a Fender Stratocaster guitar from 1963 in an ultra rare Special Order Red Sparkle Custom Colour finish. An amazing find and without a doubt one of the rarest colors ever made and highly collectable. The Fender Sparkle Colours were occasionaly ordered by US dealers in the fifties and aerly sixties and were painted at an automotive spray shop close to the Fullerton factory in California as fender were not equipped to spray Sparkle finishes. Usually they sent full guitars with all the parts attached, sometimes with a solid colour and other times with a white undercoat. The guitars were dissasembled and the parts that were not removed were masked off and the guitars were painted by an automotive spray worker. The Auto shop finishes were uniquely different to the Fender factory finishes and had unmistakable identifying features making it nowadays very easy to spot fake Sparkle finishes. We have researched these rare finishes thoroughly with the help of many world renown vintage Fender experts and can guarantee this as being a genuine Special Order Custom Colour Red Sparkle finish. This guitar was recently purchased from the son of the original owner in South Africa and it has been stored in the case for many years. The guitar features all original parts and finish, unbroken solder joints and the usual pin router holes under the pickguard in front of the neck pickup and under the jack plate cover. The neck pocket has the 'T' stamp, the neck date ink stamp and usual pencil markings that are also typical for the period. The guitar has been shot over an Olympic white Fender factory finish with Red Sparkle Automotive paint. The paint used is thicker than the paint the factory used and contains anodized metal shavings to give the sparkle effect. The body has been oversrayed with clear lacquer which is not unusual and there is no evidence whatsoever of any other colour ever having being applied. All the cavities are typical of other period Custom Colour Stratocasters and the guitar has all the identifying features including the already mentioned pin router holes and the tooling marks in the bottom of the control cavity. The worming hole in the bridge pickup cavity shows typical splintering from the router as does the trem cavity from the bridge screws and the white undercoat is clearly present. The pots are dated 15th week of 1963 and the wiring harness is totally untouched as are the pickups. The neck and headstock finish are original with an intact original logo which blacklights correctly, brazillian rosewood fingerboard and clay dot inlays. The frets are original have have lots of life left. Obviously this guitar will appeal to serious collectors due to it's rarity and pricing such a thing is extremely hard. We recently sold a rare Fiesta Red early sixties Stratocaster for $90,000 and this guitar is even rarer. These Special Custom orders were originally avaialable for an extra $75 and were available from the mid 50's although most that have surfaced are from the early 60's. Due to the extreme rarity of such a guitar we are offering the instrument with no reserve at a starting price of less than half of it's estimated value. The guitar is complete with it's original cream tolex case which is in fantastic condition, an original leather strap and snap on bridge cover.
